Located on the rocky hills of the Kudligi taluk in Bellary district in the state of Karnataka, the Gudekote Fort is named after the village it is situated in. In Kannada, the word ‘Gude’ means a heap or a group and ‘kote’ means fort.
Design of Gudekote Fort
Close to the entrance of the Gudekote Fort is a natural rock shelter in which prehistoric rock paintings can be seen. The fort has 4 major sources of water- one stepped well, two ponds, and a tank hidden among massive rocks. Within the fort is a large brick and mortar structure with no entrances at the ground level. Archaeologists believe that this structure might be a granary.
