Renowned Overseas Citizens of India are the famous non-Indian citizens who have a lifetime visa to live and work in India but with fewer restrictions. Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) scheme has been recently introduced by the Indian Government in order to allow a limited form of dual citizenship to Indians, NRIs (Non-Resident Indian) and PIOs (People of Indian Origin) for the first time since Independence. An Overseas Citizen of India is a lifetime visa status. It is the closest thing to dual citizenship that India offers.
Some of the popular Overseas Citizens of India are as follows;
Akshay Kumar: Akshay Kumar is a Canadian citizen. He gave up his Indian passport in 2011, since Indian constitution does not allow dual citizenship.
Alia Bhatt: Alia Bhatt’s mother, Soni Razdan, is of British origin. So owing to her mother’s nationality, Alia Bhatt automatically acquired the citizenship of England.
Deepika Padukone: The reigning queen of Bollywood, Deepika Padukone has a Danish passport, as she was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Imran Khan: Imran Khan, nephew of Aamir Khan was born in the United States of America and hence he is officially a citizen of America.
Monica Dogra: Monica Dogra, who made her debut with Aamir Khan’s ‘Dhobi Ghat’, is also not Indian. The actress-singer is Indian-American.
Evelyn Sharma: Evelyn Sharma is a Bollywood actress who worked in movies like ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’. She is Indian-German. She was born in Frankfurt.
The Great Khali: The Indian wrestler Dalip Singh Rana, popularly known as ‘The Great Khali’, took up American citizenship a few years ago.
Anusha Dandekar and Shibani Dandekar: Anusha Dandekar and Shibani Dandekar are both TV presenters. The Dandekar sisters hold Australian passports, owing to their parents. They grew up in New South Wales.
Jinder Mahal: The current wrestling champion, Jinder Mahal is also not Indian. He is a Canadian national.
