The Bombay Army, which was one of the three Presidency Armies created by the East India Company comprised of various military units. One such unit was Cavalry. The Cavalry was further divided into "Regular Cavalry" and "Irregular Cavalry". The cavalries of the Bombay Army are given below.
Regular Cavalries
The divisions of the Regular Cavalries of the Bombay Army were 31st Duke of Connaught`s Own Lancers, 32nd Lancers and 33rd Queen Victoria`s Own Light Cavalry. These units are described below.
31st Duke of Connaught`s Own Lancers
31st Duke of Connaught`s Own Lancers was raised as Bombay Squadron of Cavalry by Colonel John Murray in 1803. It came to be known as the 1st Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry (Lancers) in 1842. This unit was given other names like the 1st (Duke of Connaught`s Own) Bombay Lancers and 13th Duke of Connaught`s Own Lancers. It was allocated to Pakistan on Partition in 1947 becoming the 13th Lancers.
32nd Lancers
32nd Lancers was raised as Bombay Squadron of Cavalry by Colonel John Murray in 1803. It came to be known as the 2nd Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry (Lancers) in 1842. In 1947, it was allocated to Pakistan on Partition and became the 13th Lancers.
33rd Queen Victoria`s Own Light Cavalry
33rd Queen Victoria`s Own Light Cavalry was raised as the 3rd Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry by Major Peter Delamotte in 1820. It came to be known as the 3rd Regiment of Bombay Silladar Light Cavalry in 1861. This unit was given various other names like 3rd (The Queen`s Own) Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry, 17th Queen Victoria`s Own Poona Horse and The Poona Horse. In 1947, it was allocated to India on Partition.
Irregular Cavalries
Irregular Cavalries of the Bombay Army had more divisions than those of the Regular Cavalries. Two of these Irregular Cavalries are described below.
34th Prince Albert Victor`s Own Poona Horse
34th Prince Albert Victor`s Own Poona Horse was raised as The Auxillary Horse in 1817. It was given various other names like The Poona Irregular Horse, 1st Regiment of Poona Horse, The Poona Horse, 4th Bombay Cavalry (Poona Horse), etc. The unit was allocated to India on Partition in 1947.
35th Scinde Horse
The unit was raised at Hyderabad as the 1st Scinde Irregular Horse by John Jacob in 1839. It later came to be known as the 5th Bombay Cavalry and then the 35th Scinde Horse. In 1922, it amalgamated with the 36th Jacob`s Horse and became the 14th Prince of Wales`s Own Scinde Horse. The unit was allocated to India on Partition in 1947.
Some of the other Irregular Cavalries are 3rd Scinde Irregular Horse, 1st Corps Mayne`s Horse and 1st Regiment Beatson`s Horse.
