Gates in Tamil Nadu were built from the early Pallavas, Chalukyas and Badami Empire. In medieval era, Hoyasala became one of the famous designers in South India. The early history of the people and rulers of Tamil Nadu is a subject in Tamil literary sources known as Sangam literature. The three Hindu dynasties, namely the Chera, Chola and Pandya, ruled the area of present-day Tamil Nadu. The Chera Dynasty ruled the whole of present-day Kerala and parts of western Tamil Nadu comprising Coimbatore, Dharmapuri District, Karur District, Salem District and Erode district from the capital of Vanchi Muthur. The Chola dynasty ruled the northern and central parts of Tamil Nadu from their capital, Uraiyur; and the Pandya dynasty ruled southern Tamil Nadu, from capitals at Korkai and Madurai. Most of the temples were built in the ruling era of Chera, Chola and Pandya Dynasty. While some of the temples were built by the Vijaynagara Empire in medieval India.
