Ram Naik is a seasoned Indian politician who presently serves as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh in the Modi Government. He belongs to the Indian political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the government of NDA, he was designated as a central cabinet minister with the portfolio of Oil and Natural Gas. Ram Naik has significant contribution in the introduction of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. During his tenure as the Minister of State for Railways, formation of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation took place. He has been the winner of 8 elections.
Early Life of Ram Naik
Ram Naik was born on 16th April 1934 to a middle class deshastha family in Atpadi, situated in the Sangli district of the Indian state Maharashtra. He did his schooling from Bhawani Vidyalaya and graduated in Commerce from Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune. He also received L.L.B degree from Kishinchand Chellaram
College, Mumbai. Since childhood he has been an R.S.S. Swayamsevak.
Political Career of Ram Naik
Ram Naik began his career as an Upper Division Clerk in the Accountant General's Office in Mumbai. He gradually ascended to higher posts and attained the designation of Company Secretary and Management Consultant, working as the same till 1969. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party as a grass-root worker. During that period the party was named as Bharatiya Jana Sangh. In 1969 he resigned his job and began working as Organising Secretary of Mumbai unit of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Later he became the President of BJP Mumbai unit for three terms.
In the 11th Lok Sabha he served as the Chief Whip of BJP. He was a member of the 13th Lok Sabha since the year 1999 to 2004. For the elections to form the 14th Lok Sabha, he contested as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. In the elections he was the representative of Mumbai North constituency. But he lost the seat to the famous Bollywood actor Govinda who contested as an INC candidate from Virar. However in September 2013, Ram Naik declared that he will not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, putting an end to his illustrious political career. On 14th July 2014 he was announced as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Ram Naik has been the chairman of the prestigious Public Accounts Committee in 1995-96. His contributions also enlist in the committees like Joint Parliamentary Committees for Security Scam and Empowerment of Women, Railway Convention Committee and others. He also has been a Special Invitee of National Executive Committee and the National Convener of Good Governance Cell.
Personal Life of Ram Naik
Ram Naik is married to Kunda Naik since 17th May 1960 and the couple has two daughters. His elder daughter named Nishigandha Naik is a biologist by profession. Vishakha Kulkarni is his younger daughter who is also his personal secretary. In the year 1993 Ram Naik won over the dreadful disease cancer. He has also authored a book titled Saga of Struggle.
