Infrastructure of Anna Centenary Library
C. N. Raghavendran was the architect of Anna Centenary Library. It has been constructed over 8 acres of land covering an area of 333,140 square feet with its nine floors. It has the capacity of about 1.2 million books. A new plan of adopting an integrated library management system have been made by the library including automated issue and return of books, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, access controls, user smartcards and self-check counters. It can accommodate around 1,250 persons. It houses an auditorium of 50,000 square feet having a seating capacity of 1,280 and its terrace hosts an amphitheatre for accommodating 800 people. There are also two conference halls having capacity for 30 and 151 persons. It also has a power station of 32 kV capacity in the library premise. There are about 493 locations in the library building fitted with CCTV cameras. At the entrance, a 5 feet bronze idol of C.N. Annadurai has been placed.
Sections of Anna Centenary Library
Anna Centenary Library has a number of sections for the convenience of the users. There is a section for children which spans over 15,000 square feet having a fun-filled theme-based reading area equipped with multimedia kits and storybooks. It also has a high-tech section for the visually-impaired persons equipped with Braille displays and talking books. There is also a separate section for manuscripts, Own Book Reading, Periodicals, Tamil Books and English Books.
Save Anna Centenary Library Campaign
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha, on 2nd November 2011, had declared the conversion of Anna Centenary Library into a super-specialty paediatric hospital. Against this announcement, a petition was filed at the Madras High Court which passed the order on 4th November 2011 for the stay of this shifting till the submission of an answer by the government within six months. This launched an online campaign named Save Anna Centenary Library Campaign which was actively joined by a number of Professionals, Research Scientists, Professors, Poets, Scholars, Students and people of Chennai.
