History of Thanthania Kalibari
Historians state that Thanthania Kalibari was constructed around 1803, and one will discover this very date mentioned on the walls of the temple. This due to the fact that '1110' is inscribed on a wall of this temple, which if converted to Gregorian calendar, represents 1803. However, several people believe that this Kali temple was established in 1703. The actual date of construction of this temple is clouded in mystery. The 'Siddheshwari form of Goddess Kali is known to be compassionate since She is said to grant the desires of all Her devotees who prays to Her earnestly. Shankar Ghosh is credited for the erection of Thanthania Kalibari.
The Goddess is believed to be the most powerful on the occasion of 'Amavasya' or lunar eclipse, when numerous pilgrims pay a visit to this temple to offer their prayers. Devotees are permitted to offer coconuts known as 'Daab' to Goddess Siddheshwari, which can be collected from roadside vendors.
