This natural sanctuary is housed with a large number of wild animals, birds and reptiles and also some endangered species, this is included among the major national parks of Assam like Orang National Park, Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Bio sphere Reserve, Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary and Kaziranga National Park, etc.
Pabitora Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 60 kilometres away from Guwahati. Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary got its status of a reserve forest in 1971 for the dwindling number of Rhinoceros, which existed in the area before 1971. This sanctuary is located at a flat land coupled with a gentle inclination in the direction of east to west, excluding the region of Burha-Mayong hillock.
Pabitora Sanctuary is one of natural attractions in Morigaon district. Any trip to the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary would definitely be meaningful and successful that refreshes the visitors from their regular hangover. It enjoys some of the splendid nature's bounties in the north-eastern state of India.
This place enjoys some of the most splendid sights with its various categories of deer, apart from its steady count of Rhinos. Some wetlands of Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary like the regions of Chitalmari, Tamuliduba and Dholi have become significant locations for Ferruginous Duck and number of migratory birds that often visit the area
This Wildlife park is mainly famous for its one-horned rhinoceros. Besides rhinoceros, there are other animals like leopard, wild boar, Barking deer, wild buffalo etc. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to more than 2000 migratory birds and various reptiles. There are now around 93 rhinos, a ten per cent increase over the last six years. This attracts the tourists of both domestic and foreign. These 93 rhinos are surviving on merely 16 square kilometre area of the park. This wildlife sanctuary is under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020. It is a joint programme of the Department of Environment and Forests under Government of Assam with the aid of World Wildlife Fund India (WWF India).
One can travel to the park by air, train or a railway as the nearest railhead is Guwahati. The place is also connected with nearest airport of Guwahati airport or Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. These airports are linked with Kolkata, Delhi, Tripura, Mumbai, Imphal, Jorhat, Hyderabad, Bangalore, etc.
