The 4th Hazara Pioneers was a former infantry regiment that functioned under the administration of the British Indian Army. The army unit was raised in the year 1922, when the British Government of India re-numbered and re-structured all the regiments of the British Indian Army in 1922. The single infantry regiments were joined together to develop larger multi battalion infantry units that comprised of 4 to 6 battalions in each regiment. Hence the 106th Hazara Pioneers was re-designated as the 1st Battalion 4th Hazara Pioneers. The 4th Hazara Pioneers was also known as the Independent Pioneer Battalion.

The 4th Hazara Pioneers unit was one of the 4 major Pioneer regiments that were raised in the year 1922. It was developed by the unification of 3 former British Indian Army regiments, namely the 3rd Sikh Pioneers, the 3rd Sikh Pioneers and the 1st Madras Pioneers.
