The 4th Bombay Grenadiers was founded on 1 March 1922 as an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. The unit was incorporated as a part of the reorganization of the British Indian Army after the culmination of World War I. The regiment served in British Somaliland in Africa, on the North West Frontier and in China over the following 15 years. The 3rd, 4th and 5th Battalions of the regiments were all dissolved. Further more the 10th Battalion was merged with the 10th Battalion Jat Regiment win order to establish a Combined Training Centre near Bareilly. After the Second World War, the 4th Bombay Grenadiers were assigned to the newly formed British Indian Army and was named The Grenadiers.
The regiment of the 4th Bombay Grenadiers of the British Indian Army comprised of 6 battalions, which were all separate regiments in the past. The 6 battalions of the 4th Bombay Grenadiers are mentioned below-
* 1st Battalion (previously known as the 101st Grenadiers)
* 2nd Battalion (previously known as the 102nd King Edward`s Own Grenadiers)
* 3rd Battalion (previously known as the 108th Infantry)
* 4th Battalion (previously known as the 109th Infantry)
* 5th Battalion (previously known as the 112th Infantry)
* 10th Battalion- Training (previously known as the 113th Infantry)
During the commencement of World War II, the Bombay Grenadiers Regiment consisted of only 2 battalions of the regiment, namely the 1st and 2nd Bombay Grenadiers. Eventually numerous battalions were developed for providing service during the war, which included the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 14th, 25th, 26th and 27th Battalions. The 10th Battalion (Training) was detached from the Jat Regiment as well. Few of the battalions were garrisoned and served as merely rear area troops. Some of the other battalions served with distinction in several theatres during the Second World War, particularly in the Middle East and Burma and also in the Arakan campaigns, as well as at Kohima.
The 4th Bombay Grenadiers also raised the motorised infantry element of the Indian Armoured and Tank brigades. This was identified as Tank Escort Infantry which protected tanks against stealth and sniper attacks during jungle warfare. The regiment included the following-

* 2/4th Battalion, 50th Indian Tank Brigade
* 3/4th Battalion, 254th Indian Tank Brigade
* 4/4th Battalion, 255th Indian Tank Brigade
