Economy of Surendranagar District in the state of Gujarat depends largely on textiles, chemicals, ceramics and food processing industries. Textiles and chemicals have been the most important sectors of investment and employment in the district, for more than two decades. The district is the leading producer of Shankar Cotton in the world and also is the home to the first Cotton Trading Exchange of India. Surendranagar has rich reserves of silica sand, fire clay, white clay and moulding sand. Quite a few known industrial groups are present in Surendranagar which include, PET Plastics, Unifrax, PepsiCo India Holding Ltd., Luxite Industries, Biodeal Laboratories, Mepro Pharmaceuticals, Rimtex Group, and Panama Group.

There are more than 8,639 SSI units registered in the district and involved in diverse sectors, such as chemicals, food products, repairing, textiles, ceramics, and servicing, etc. Maximum numbers of SSIs are present in sectors such as, Patdi ceramics, textile products and machinery, chemicals, food processing, and machine tools. Wadhwan taluka has witnessed maximum number of SSI units with a healthy investment and providing jobs to 19,618 people. Emergence of industries g engaged in medical, common households and drugs and pharmaceuticals have made a noteworthy contribution to the financial system of the district, over the last decade.

Favourable agricultural environment and appropriate climatic conditions has made the district an emerging hub for food and agro and textile industries. Industry sectors such as, ceramics, textile products and machinery, food processing, chemicals and machine tools are the supporting pillars of the economy. They provide direct and indirect employment to more than 9,000 persons in the district. Proximity with commercial districts such as, Ahmedabad, Kutch, and Rajkot has made Surendranagar a flourishing industrial location. Tourism is another chief economic activity witnessed in the district. The district is well-known for its Tarnetar Fair, Chotila hills and Ranakdevi temple.
