Udbodhan or the Mother's House serves as the centre which looks after the propagation of the philosophies of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda through its published work in Bengali. It has gained the name Mayer Bari because it was the residence of the Holy Mother Swami Saradananda. Udbodhan is situated in Baghbazar of Kolkata. Udbodhan in fact is also the name of the official magazine owned by the Ramakrishna Math and the Mission.
Udbodhan was started by Swami Vivekananda in January, 1899. Before the beginning of Udbodhan all the literary works of the organisation that is Ramakrishna Math and Mission were carried out by "Brahmavadin" and "Prabuddha Bharat" in Madras under the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda.
Udbodhan till today remains an important pillar of Bengali literature because it has enriched Bengali literature by contributing it with Vedanta literature and the teachings of Shri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. Apart from carrying out the activities of publication and daily worship, Udbodhan is also closely associated with teaching sessions which impart the ideologies and philosophies of Shri Ramakrishna. Three days in the week after the 'arati' session the devotees get a scope to learn about the life and teachings of Ramakrishna.
In Udbodhan special worship is done of the Holy Mother. Apart from worshipping the Holy Mother elaborate arrangements are done on the occasion of Kali Puja and Shiv Ratri. Even on Christmas Eve and Ram Navami special worship is done in the house.
Hence it can be said that as a branch house of the Ramakrishna Math, Udobodhan tries to be closely associated with the ideologies of the organisations and tries to impart into the minds of people the broader philosophies of life through its publications and teaching sessions.
