In the science of ancient India, Samvatsara is the name of the first of the five Cycles or Yugas, consisting of twelve years.
In the cycle of sixty years there are five cycles of twelve years. The five cycles or yugas are, Samvatsara, Parivatsara, Idavatsara, Anuvatsara and Idvatsara. Over Samvatsara presides Agni, over Parivatsara controls Aditya, over the Yuga Idavatsara controls Candramas, over Anuvatsara presides Vayu or Brahman and Shiva controls over Idvatsara.
