Palaka means a protector or ruler. Loka palakais is an epithet applied to a king. Dikpalaka is a regent of one of the eight points of the heavens. Each point of heaven is supported by one of the ashta dik gajas, or elephant caryatides. The names of the dikpalakas are Indra in the East, Varuna in the West, Kuvera in the North, Yama in the South, Isani in the North East, Niruta in South West, Vayu in North West and Agni supporting the South East.
Palaka is the name of a son of Pradyota king of Magadha. There were five kings of the progeny of Pradyota, who reigned for a hundred and thirty-eight years
