Ayana is a period of six months. Two Ayanas compose a year. The southern Ayana is a night and the northern Ayana is a day of the gods.
Period of four Yugas or ages are formed by twelve thousand divine years and each year is composed of such days. The word Ayana is also used for hemisphere. The Uttara Ayana is the apparent course of the sun through the northern signs. The Dakshina Ayana is the southerly course hence the northern and southern hemispheres appear to correspond with the two Ayanas.
