The 25th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry or the 25th Madras Infantry was an infantry unit that functioned under the Madras Army. The unit was raised under the British East India Company and existed from the year 1794 to 1907. The army of Madras Presidency was established with the objective of defending the commercial interests of the Honourable English East India Company. It was one of the 3 major Presidency Armies in British India. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the British Presidency Armies were merged to form the British Indian Army in the year 1903. The infantry regiment was also included as a part of the Madras Command. It was also designated as the 78th Moplah Rifles.
History of 25th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
The 25th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry was formed in the year 1794 as the 35th Madras Battalion. The troops of the regiment provided active support during the Third Burmese War from 7 November 1885 to 29 November 1885. Later in the year 1902, the 25th Madras Infantry was titled as the 2nd Moplah Rifles. A detachment of the unit was sent to England Coronation Ceremony of Edward VII in the same year. After the Kitchener reforms of the British Indian Army in 1903, the regiment was finally dissolved in the year 1907.
