Awa-Devi temple, also called Jalpa Devi, is located in Bhoranj tehsil on Hamirpur-Sarkaghat road, at a distance of 24km from Hamirpur. The temple is placed amidst picturesque surroundings, atop a hill. The temple goes back to over 250 years in its built and is cared by a local committee. According to local legends, the people of Mandi district had wished to carry the idol of the Goddess to their place. However, when they were undergoing their feat, they suddenly had lost their eyesight. When they turned back, to utter amazement, their sight was reestablished. In conclusion they were forced to place the idol to its particular place from where they had taken it. Since then, local people have faith in the goddess. Most people worship Awa-Devi as their patron goddess (kul-devi). Every year large number of disciples visits the Awa-Devi temple to fulfill their desires. Ecological Survey of India has chosen this place, i.e. the hilltop, as the maximal height for Hamirpur district.
