There are different sports in Manipur of different variety and diversity. The games are Manipuri Polo, Manipuri Rugby, Hiyang Tannaba, Thang-Ta & Sarit Sarat, Mukna, Kang etc.

Sports in ManipurThere are different sports in Manipur of different variety and diversity. They are:
Manipuri Polo: The Manipuri Polo is played with seven players (in each side) who mount and ride ponies, which are usually 4/5 feet in height. Each player is fitted with Polo-stick made of bamboo root. Manipuries in their sixties and even seventies ride ponies in full vigor while playing this game.

(Manipuri Rugby: This game is played on the palace ground or at the Bijoy Govinda Temple ground. On each side there are 7 players. The field is about 45x18 meters in area. Coconut serves the purpose of a ball and is offered to the king or the judges who sit just beyond the goal line.

Sports in Manipur Hiyang Tannaba (Boat Race): It is generally held in the month of November at Thangapat. The boats called Hiyang Hiren are regarded to be possessed with spiritual powers and the game is associated with religious rites. The people believe that worship of the Hiyang Hiren will prevent one from evil omens. The rowers wear traditional dresses and headgears. The game is also conducted during natural calamity.

Thang-Ta & Sarit Sarat: These are the forms of Manipuri Martial Arts. They are energy consuming and skill demanding arts of fighting. A martial-artist has to undergo strenuous practice sessions. Only the brave and the athletic can win.

Mukna (Manipuri Wrestling): The game is played between two male rivals. Athletes of the same or approximately the same physical built, weight or ages are made to compete with each other. This is a highly popular and prestigious game.

Kang: is played on the mud floor of a big out house. The "Kang" is a flat and rectangle instrument made of either ivory or lac. Normally each team has 7 male partners. The game is also played as a mixed doubles contest.
