The Zonal Anthropological Museum was established in the year 1953 in the city of Shillong in Meghalaya. The museum offers insights into the history, lifestyle, culture, customs, and traditions of the three major matrilineal communities of the state, namely the Khasis, the Jaintia also known as the Pnars, and the Garos commonly known as the Achik. The museum has in house library and archived services.
The main objective of this anthropological museum is to study the tribes and other communities that form the population of the nation both from the biological and cultural point of view. The museum also studies and preserves the human skeletal remains from both ancient and contemporary times and uses the facility as a training centre for students to study anthropology. The museum maintains and documents the traditional art and craft of the people of the specific state.
