The district headquarters is at Bathinda, which is situated 15 km. north of Goniana. The nearest airport is at Chandigarh. NH 15 passes through Goniana, which helps it to connect to other neighbouring cities. The nearest railway station is the Goniana Railway Station, which is situated on the Bathinda-Faridkot line of the Northern Railways.

As per the 2001 India census report, Goniana had a population of 12,812 inhabitants. Males and females account for 54% and 46% of the population. In Goniana, 12% of the population is less than six years of age. The city has an average literacy rate of 71%, which is higher than the national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 75% and the female literacy rate is 66%.

Nearby attraction is the Gurdwara Vidyasara Patshahi Satvin, built in memory of Guru Har Rai Sahib, at Amargarh village. The Bahiya fort, Quila Mubaraka, Rose Garden and Lakhi Jungle constitute interesting excursions in the vicinity of Goniana.
