Indian Hockey, the `National Game of India`, has been one of the most popular sports in the country since its inception. The game came to India during the second half of the 19th century and it was introduced by the British Army regiments. Hockey in India has earned a lot of recognition and the game is being managed by a number of state and national Hockey associations. The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) is in charge of the management of Indian Hockey, as it is the national governing body for Hockey in India. The IHF is being associated by several State Hockey Associations that are working as the members of IHF.

Indian Hockey Associations
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has recently appointed a new five-member national selection committee that would work for the management of Indian Hockey. The committee is well known as the New Committee (IOA) and it is working in conjunction with the International Field Hockey Federation (FIH). Besides the IHF, New Committee and State Hockey associations, there are also some Hockey academies like the Dhanraj Ballal Hockey Academy that are working towards bringing new talents in Indian Hockey.

Indian Hockey Teams
The Indian national Hockey team is an integral part of Indian Hockey. It has so far brought a lot of glory for the nation by winning a large number of prestigious international tournaments. The Indian men`s Hockey team has the credit of consecutively winning six Olympic Gold medals from 1928 to 1956. The Indian women`s Hockey team has also earned recognition in the international arena and it won three Gold medals in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, and in the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup.

Apart from the Indian men`s Hockey team and Indian women`s Hockey team, there are also a large number of Hockey teams in India that are continuously contributing to the improvement of Indian Hockey. The Indian Hockey teams can be classified in various ways like the National Senior Hockey team, the National Junior Hockey team, the Indian Women`s Hockey team, the Indian State Hockey teams, the club teams, various Services teams etc. They participate in various Indian national Hockey tournaments and help in upbringing new talents to represent India in the international level. The Premier Hockey League (PHL) is the newest features in Indian Hockey and it has added a new dimension for Hockey in India.

India has so far produced numerous talented and legendary Hockey players, who have ruled the world of Hockey during their hey-days. Indian Hockey players have been praised and appreciated in all over the world for their extraordinary talent and excellence on the field of Hockey. Apart from earning recognition and reputation in the international arena, there are also several Indian Hockey players, who have received the prestigious Indian sports award, the Arjuna Award. All the Arjuna Awardees in Hockey have made extraordinary contributions to Indian Hockey.

Indian hockey is vigorously played and enjoyed by people all over India, and its achievements in international sport are as yet unmatched by other Indian sports teams. Albeit unable to maintain its earlier legendary status, India still remains the most successful hockey team in Olympic history, with 8 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. It is hence one of India`s most distinguished sports.
