Education of Uttarakhand shows 72.28% total literacy, where the percentage of male literacy is 84.01% and female is 60.26%. The Uttarkand board of school educations and exams are working under the umbrella of Directorate of School Education. One of the oldest engineering colleges of the country, the Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee, is at G.B.Pant University, Uttarakhand. Other universities of prime importance are the G. B. Pant University in Pantnagar, Kumaun University in Nainital and Almora, and the H.N.B. Garhwal University in Srinagar.

Uttarakhand State has introduced free and quality education for the talented students in the rural areas, who can not afford to study, through the Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya residential schools. There are seven Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalayas, started in the seven districts of Uttarakhand.
