Yogadyan means a garden for Yog or Sadhana rather it was a place where one could exercise his spirituality. The name Yogadyan was given by Ramakrishna Paramahansa himself. Today Yogadyan as it stands in Kankurgachi of Kolkata has become an important pilgrimage site for people both inside and outside the country due to its divine nature and serene atmosphere.
According to history once Shri Ramakrishna had asked one of his devotees Shri Ramchandra Dutta to find a tranquil location which is absolutely suitable for Sadhana. Ramchandra decided on this particular location and Ramakrishna was so impressed with the serenity and solitude of the place that he named the place Yogdyan where he could carry out his sadhana in a peaceful manner. Yogadyan has attained its divine status after the visit of Ramakrishna Paramahansa in this place in 1883.
The holy shrine of the spiritual leader adds to the divinity of the place. The devotees gather in Yogadyan to meditate and to carry out their sadhana. The ways in which the prayers are offered daily at Yogadyan also draws the devotees to this place. Apart from celebrating the birth ceremonies of these great spiritual leaders Yogadyan also encourages the celebration of festivals like Kali Puja and Shiv Ratri. Those interested to enhance their spiritual knowledge are free to use the library of Yogadyan and also meet the senior monks who are present there.
In addition to all these Yogadyan is also associated with a number of social activities. For instance, Yogodyan`s `Vivekananda Balak Sangha` looks after the young boys and arranges for their education and other activities contributing to their all round development. The monks of Yogadyan provide coaching and free meals to the poor boys of the society because according to Swami Vivekananda the youth were the most powerful resource of a society. Medical facilities have also received ample importance among the monks of Yogadyan and as a result they have set up a charitable dispensary.
