Wildlife of Arunachal Pradesh asserts to have species that are extinct today. Four major varieties of the big cats in its jungles that includes leopard,Royal bengal tiger, snow leopard and clouded leopard. Lesser catlike species like the marbled cat and golden cat are also visible. More than 500 species of birds have been found there, many of which are highly endangered and found in this state only. They are the white-winged duck, scatter and few others. A large mammal called "Mithun" is a majestic animal, which is native to Arunachal Pradesh.
There are several Wild Life Sanctuaries and National Parks to preserve the natural habitat of the state. They are the Eagle nest Wildlife Sanctuary, Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Mouling National Park, Kane Wildlife Sanctuary, Dr D. Erring Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary and Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary.
The state of Arunachal Pradesh is a habitat to a rich mammalian wildlife population. This is because of the wide variety of altitudinal and climatic conditions have given rise to different forest types which create corresponding natural shelter, food to varieties of wildlife. It has four Wildlife Sanctuaries and two National Parks. It is home to many rare species of Wild life like Hoolock Gibbon, Takin, Mishmi, Musk Deer, Bharal, Hisbid Hare, Flying Squirrel and many more species.
Namdapha National Park has the most diverse habitat of any of South Asia`s protected areas. It was upgraded to the status of National park in 1983.It is unique because of its elevation and feline species. All the three goat antelopes Serow, Goral and Takin are found here. Arunachal Pradesh is the only state in India where Takin is found. As far large mammals are concerned Mittan, which is a cross between the wild Gaur and domestic cattle, buffalo and elephant are all found. The high altitude animals found there are Red panda, Himalayan Black bear and so on. The Musk deer is found in some parts of the state while the bharal is found in the western part of the state. Smaller mammals that are found there include squirrels, porcupine and rats; civet, mongoose, linsang, Tree shrew and bat species.
Arunachal Pradesh possesses more than five hundred bird species many of which are extinct and found in this state only. Sclater monal, White winged wood duck, temminck`s tragopan; Bangal florican can be sited as examples. Hornbill is the state bird of Arunachal Pradesh which goes to prove that it is the home of this extraordinary bird. Reptiles, amphibians and Pisces are abundant in this state. Pythons and snakes of all types and colours are found in the forests.
