Varman Dynasty of Assam

Varman dynasty was initially feudatories of the Gupta Empire. This dynasty was established by Pushya varman in 350 AD. This dynasty ruled Kamarupa in Assam. However as the power of the Guptas diminished, Mahendravarman (470-494) performed two horse sacrifices and became independent.

This dynasty is also known as Naraka or Bhauma dynasty as it traces its ancestry to the mythological characters Narakasura, Bhagadatta and Vajradatta. Bhaskara Varman was the most famous monarch of this dynasty. He claimed be a descendant from Lord Vishnu. He was a staunch Buddhist.
