Upayaja is the name of a Brahman in the ancient India. He had eminent learning and sacredness in him and it is believed that King rupada applied in his anxiety to procure a son. The King also made a promise of presenting Upayaja a million of cows if he became successful to enable the King in obtaining the son he desired. However, according to the mythology, Upayaja declined the task and referred the King to his elder brother Yaja.
