The Triumph of Labour is a magnificent statues erected at Marina Beach in the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Labour statue constructed at the end of the beach on the northern side at the Anna square located the opposite of the University of Madras. The statue was constructed by Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhry that depicts four men working hard to remove a rock from its position. It shows the drudgery of the working or the labour class. The statue was established in the year 1959 on the Republic Day by the Kamaraj government to fulfil its mission to beautify the beach. The statue of the Triumph of Labour is one of the first models to have been built on the banks. It has been established in the vicinity of the place where the first commemoration of May Day was organised in India. Triumph of Labour bears resemblance to the famous photograph of World War II that depicts the hoisting of the at the hands of the American Marines on Iwo Jima. Every year during the May Day celebrations in Chennai the statue remains as the centre of attraction.
History of Triumph of Labour
In the year 1923 a labour union leader, M. Singaravelar, held a meeting on a summer evening to acknowledge the rights of the workers. The meeting was conducted at the Marina Beach near Triplicane. There he gave assurance of forming a political party that would represent the rights of labourers. It was the first May Day rally in India. Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhry who sculptured the statue was the first Indian principal of the Government of Madras School of Arts and Crafts. Presently, it is known as Tamil Nadu Government College of Fine Arts.
