Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve is located in Tiruvidaimarudur village in Thanjavur District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. On 14th February, 2005 it was declared as the first Conservation Reserve to be established in India. The reserve is situated almost 10 kilometres from Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve is an IUCN Category V protected bird nesting area and is spread over an area of 2.84 hectares.
Management of Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve
Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve is maintained and managed by the village community and Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The local Community and the public too are engaged in the conservation process. The Amendments to the Wild life Protection Act in 2003 offered a mechanism for recognising and providing legal backing to community engaged in wildlife protection. The Act offered a flexible system where wildlife conservation can be achieved without negotiation the needs of the community. Tiruppadaimarathur Conservation Reserve was set up with the villagers coming forward for protecting the birds nesting in their villages.
Fauna and Flora of Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve
Tiruvidaimarudur Conservation Reserve is home to like Maruthu, Mahwa, Neem and Illuppai trees. It is a habitat for several types of birds like Little Egrets, Pond heron and Painted Stork. The agricultural fields with these trees provide nesting ground to these birds. A few ponds and the Tamiraparani River are located adjacent to it. Pond heron and egrets also make their nests in backyards of few village houses, while Painted storks can be seen around the temple. Spot billed pelicans also come for refuge here.
