Temple of Dandpan

Temple of Dandpan is a famous pilgrimage centre in Varanasi. The temple can be reached by proceeding down a narrow street and passing under an archway to the left hand side. A famous sacred well known as Kal-kup, or the Well of Fate is also located here. The walls of the temple have been beautifully decorated with artistic designs. Over the trellis work of the outer wall of the building there is a square hole. The hole has been well set in a particular position in relation to the sun. It has been made in such a way that at twelve o`clock, the rays of the sun, passes through the hole and impinges upon the water in the well below. It is thought to be very sacred to visit the well at this point of time. Thus many people gather near the sacred well and pray for their safe future. They also wish for their dreams to be fulfilled and also search into the secrets of the Future.

The temple of Dandpan also houses the idol of Mahakal or Great Fate. Devotes throng here to offer their prayers at the feet of the Lord and receive his blessings. It is believed by the devotees that the Lord bestows salvation on his worshippers and also protects them from bad times by controlling Kal or Evil Destiny. Apart from the main idol there are also images of the five brothers, or Panch Pandavas, i.e. Yudhisthir, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva of the famous Indian Epic Mahabharata. These were the sons of Kunti and King Pandu.
