The gateway was constructed by Sultan Ahmed Shah, the founder of Ahmedabad. The monument was constructed in the year 1411 AD. Teen Darwaja serves as the entrance to the Royal Square or Maidan Shahi. Teen Darwaza is one of the longest as well as the oldest gateways of the Ahmedabad city. The impressive structure is popular for its extraordinary proportions and ornamentation.

The gateway is located in the fort complex and lies adjacent to the famous Bhadra fort. Teen Darwaza has been intricately carved. Earlier it served as an entrance to Royal Square at Bhadra Fort. According to history Jahangir, the great Mughal emperor used to visit the place with his beloved wife Noorjahan. He admired the procession that started from this grand gateway and went till the Jama Masjid. The walls and pillars of Teen Darwaza are beautifully designed.

Teen Darwaza of Ahmedabad is truly an epitome of the fine Islamic architecture. Consisting of gorgeous arched gates, the windows of this fabulous monument are semi circular in design. They are adorned using mesh work. The central window depicts the tree of life. Five palm trees are displayed that are covered with snakes. This portrayal also depicts the symbol of the Gujarat Government. This majestic fortress is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Ahmedabad.

One of the most flourishing shopping zones in Ahmedabad is situated in the vicinity of Teen Darwaja. The market in this area offers a wide variety of items that can be bought, including a rich collection of traditional fabrics and clothes.
