Swami Mast Ram Jee initially had the name of Sohan Lal. He was born in a very rich family, in Budlada, Punjab in 1931. He was married to Hukum Devi at the age of 23. His intense desire of knowing about the existence of God remained and he left his family and wandered throughout India.
His search for a spiritual guru ended in Kashmir, when he met the revered saint, Swami Nand Lal Ji Maharaj. After testing his devotion, Swami Nand Lal Ji renamed him as Mast Ram. He learned about meditation, under the proper guidance of his guru. After completing his spiritual education, he decided to spread his knowledge among the common people.
In order to spread his spreading his knowledge to the common people, he founded an ashram at Badipora in Budgam district and another one at Patoli in Jammu. He has contributed immensely to the Kashmiri literature and he has written considerable number of scholarly books, during his lifetime. One of his books named "Sahaj Kosam" is containing the bhajans of famous Kashmiri poets. He also established his Ashrams in Delhi and Haridwar. He speaks fluent Kashmiri and sings all Kashmiri bhajans easily.
Sahaj Kosam contains the bhajans of famous Kashmiri poets. It contains the life history and poetry of 23 famous great sons of Kashmiri Pandit community.
