Sri Kamakha Amman Temple is one of the most prominent temples of Kanchipuram Tamil Nadu which is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. This temple is another important temple which is dedicated to the tradition of worshipping Goddess Parvati as worshiped in the Meenakshi Temple of Madurai, Akhilandeswari temple in Tiruchirapalli. Also known a Kamaskshi temple, it is dedicated to goddess Kamakshi who is seated in the form of Padmasana. Originally dedicated to Goddess Parvati it consists of the deity of Goddess Kamakshi who is re-incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The goddess holds a sugarcane bow on one hand and a bunch of flowers in her lower hands while a pasha and ankusha on her upper hand. This symbolizes that the deity is a super power who has complete control over all the land that is lying under her. Sri Kamakha Amman Temple is one of the remarkable architectures of Kanchipuram which was built on the Dravidian style if architecture. With its well caved gopuram and numerous sculptures it depicts the art of Dravidian age which is always known for splendid architecture and elaborate gopurams. The ancient temple is often known for a number of legends. According to common legends the deity inside is the form of Parvati who had gain all powers of Shakti in order to get the blessings of Lord Kama the God of Love. Again it is also believed that it is the image of Raja Rajeswari who poses complete control over the land and air. Accordingly Devi offered worship to the Shivalingam made up of sand and on return won his hand.
Besides this the temple stretches upto 5 acres of land. It includes a shikhara which has he sculptures of goods and goddesses particularly the deity of Goddess Parvati in different form which is completely made up of gold. This massive gold gopuram attracts the attention of all. There are at least four entrances which are to be crossed before the actual deity is reached. In the outer Parakarma there is a holy tank and numerous mandapas and halls which have at 100 pillars, it also includes the images of Lord Vishnu like Ninraan, Irundaan and Kidandaan. Along with its traditional rituals the temple is also known for some festivals like Navratri, Aadi, Aippasi Pooram, Sankara Jayanthi and Vasanta Utsavam in Vaikasi which are celebrated in this temple.
Thus it is one of the ancient temples which is known for its legends and architecture which is most attractive for all the tourists who visit the temple.
