History of Hombuja
According to history Hombuja dates back to 6th Century AD. The kshetra is dedicated to Lord Parshvanatha and Devine Mother Padmavati Deviji. Hombuja is regarded as the most ancient Dharmapeetham. Bhattaraka Seat of this place was also started during 6th Century AD. The temple is believed to have miraculous powers. Thousands of devotees from different places visit the temple to offer their prayers to the Lord. It is said that if the Lord is worshipped with devotion it fulfills the desires of the devotees. There is a tree of Lakky that is still green. It is as old as the Mahakshetra.
Temple of Shri Hombuja Atishaya Mahakshetra
The temple of Shri Hombuja Atishaya Mahakshetra has two temples, Lord Parshvanath Temple and Padmavati Devi Temple. These are the oldest temple located here. Apart from this, Shri Jain Math Temple is also located here. It is dedicated to Lord Neminath, the twenty second Tirthankara. Other than these there are many other temples located here. Shri Mahavir Bhawan Temple, Makkal Basadi, Pancha Basadi, Guddada Basadi (Temple on hill), Ashokvana Basadi, Kshetrapala Temple are also situated here. Guddada Basadi is located on a hill. All together there are 15 temples located here.
Shri Hombuja Atishaya Mahakshetra is surrounded by scenic beauty. The place is well adorned by the by the lush green forests and small villages. There is a beautiful lake nearby which makes the place picturesque and attractive. The hill view of the place enthralls the pilgrims and tourists visiting the place. The temple organises annual gatherings. The Maha Rathotsawa is celebrated in the month of Phalguna. Other festivals like Vijaya Dashami are also celebrated. It has provisions for dharamshalas or rest houses for the pilgrims. These are well equipped with all modern facilities. Devendra Bhawan, D G S Bhawan, Mahavira Bhawan are some of the guest houses located here.
Shri Hombuja Atishaya Mahakshetra is well connected with road, rail and air. Bus Services are available from Shimoga, Sagara, Tirth hally, Karkala, Moodbidri, Udupi. Taxies are also available from various cities and from Bengaluru and Mangalore airport too. The nearest railway station is located at Shimoga. Trains are available from Bengaluru to Shimoga. Another station is located at Udupi. The nearest airport is located at Mangalore located at a distance of 160 Km, Bengaluru at a distance of 350 Km and Goa is situated at a distance of 300 Km.
