Shergarh Fort, Rajasthan

Currently in ruins, the Shergarh Fort is one of the popular ancient forts of Rajasthan that attracts tourists from all around.

Shergarh Fort, Dholpur, RajasthanLocated south to the city of Dholpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the Shergarh Fort is situated on the banks of the Chambal River. According to historical records, it is said that the Shergarh Fort was built in 1532 by King Maldev but was later attacked and captured by Sher Shah Suri. The fort was rechristened after Sher Shah Suri and was restored in 1540 AD.

Overview of Shergarh Fort
In the mid 16th century, the Shergarh Fort was restored to protect the Afghan kingdom from the onslaughts of the Mewar on the western frontier. The fort"s location was a strategic one as a defence measure. Embellished with enchanting images and beautifully carved sculptures of Hindu Gods and delicate Jain motifs, the Shergarh Fort was in use until the beginning of 20th century. There are four entrance points to the fort but the one in the east is the frequently used. Currently in ruins, the Shergarh Fort also houses a Hanuman Temple, several palaces, courtyards, a tomb and several other structures.
