Sarasgad Fort

The Sarasgad Fort is one of the forts of Maharashtra which is currently maintained by the Indian government and is a popular site of tourism among trekkers.

Sarasgad Fort, Raigad District, MaharashtraSituated near the village of Pali in Raigad district of the Indian state of Maharashtra, the Sarasgad Fort stands at an elevation of 1600 ft. This hill fort is the twin of the Sudhagad Fort. Constructed from stones, the Sarasgad Fort once used to be a watchtower because of its 4 pinnacles but is currently in ruins.

Overview of Sarasgad Fort
On the premises of the Sarasgad Fort are caves, which were once used by the soldiers, a Shiva temple, and around 10 tanks carved in rocks, which provides water throughout the year. From the southern side, there were 111 steps carved from stone leading to the Sarasgad Fort and the door from this side was known as "Dindi Darwaja". To improve and repair the fortifications of the fort, the Maratha Emperor Shivaji gave 2000 golden coins and until the Indian Independence, the fort remained in the princely state of Bhor. Presently, the fort is preserved and maintained by the Government of India.
