The movie was a great hit where the producer-director Raj Kapoor has taken his own son Rajiv Kapoor and newcomer Mandakini as protagonists. Besides the actors, the film is remarkable for its dialogues, music as well as cinematography. It was the last film by Raj Kapoor before his death in 1988. The film was the highest grossing Hindi movie of 1985.

Synopsis of Ram Teri Ganga Maili
The story of the Indian movie "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" is a love story set in accordance with the political scenario. "Narendra Sahay" played by Rajiv Kapoor is the son of "Jeeva Sahay" played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He is a rich politician in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Narendra Sahay visits Gangotri</b> to study the source of the holy River Ganga, and to get some holy water for his wheelchair-bound paternal grandma. There he meets a very pretty girl "Ganga" played by Mandakini. Ganga lives near Gangotri with her brother, Karam. Very soon they fell in love with each other and decided to get married. They are happily married but all of a sudden Narendra has to go back to Kolkata as he wanted to convince his parents about Ganga. While leaving for Kolkata, he promised that very soon he will come back to her. But in actual he could not do so because of some unavoidable circumstances.

Ganga was alone and no one was there to look after her; finally she decides to go to her husband, Narendra. Ganga travels from her place, Gangotri to Kolkata to find her husband. At Rishikesh she was exploited by two women and a man. Then at Benaras, she was molested by a Pandit, rescued by the police and given a ticket to Kolkata. She fell into the clutches of Manilal who lured her to a brothel near Benaras. At the end she meets her husband when he was getting married to another girl. His father fixes his marriage with "Radha" played by Divya Rana, who is the daughter of his friend, Bhagwat Choudhary played by Raza Murad. Narendra was being informed that Ganga is dead. So he decides to marry according to his father"s wish. On the other hand Ganga is invited to dance on her husband"s marriage. But lastly love wins and he recognizes his wife Ganga. They try to go with their son but Jeeva Sahay, who never losses to anyone, cannot take it and he shoots Ganga. But eventually hurts his own son Narendra. Narendra understands the real scenario of his father"s game and goes away with Ganga forever.

Hangal, Tom Alter, etc. The film was directed as well as produced by Raj Kapoor. The music was given by Ravindra Jain while cinematography was done by Radhu Karmakar.
