Raktavija is an asura who fought together with Shumbha and Nishumbha against goddess Durga. Raktavija had a power that whenever a drop of his blood fell on the ground, a duplicate raktavija would be born at that spot.
When goddess Durga hit Raktavija, then blood fell from his flesh. Each drop of blood that shed from his body had the singular virtue to produce hundreds of demons like him. Goddess Durga was in difficulty. The strokes of the Goddess Durga weapons began, therefore, to harass her own self more than her malignant enemy and that exactly in proportion to her success.
The demons produced by the Raktavija`s blood infected the whole universe. The gods were very afraid. Seeing the gods` frightened, the goddess created Kali or Chamunda. The goddess Kali struck Raktavija and made her tongue onto the earth, and sucked off the blood pouring from the body of Raktavija, and devoured his duplicates with her gaping mouth. She ate up all the other demons produced from the blood previously shed by Raktavija.
