Bordered by the Matla and Piyali Rivers, the island is located at the confluence of these two rivers and is known to be one of the main entry points to the Sunderbans. The Piyali Island in Sunderban can be reached through a small bridge over the Piyali River.

The Piyali Island itself is the main attraction with its exquisite paddy fields, forest patches and the flowing Piyali River. The mangrove trees are scattered through the bank of the rivers and the beautiful Matla River offers a resplendent view. This is a great place for bird watching as the island is home to a variety of bird species. Exploring the village life and settlements around the island is also an interesting activity. Many educational tours are also organized here. During winters, a number of gorgeous and colourful migratory birds gather in the island.

The Piyali Island is located at a distance of 75 km from Kolkata. Using roadways, one can drive to Piyali via Baruipur- Gocharan- Dhosa road, which takes about 2.5 hours to reach. The nearest railhead is the Dakshin- Barasat station at a distance of almost 86 km from the island. And the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the closest at a distance of 78 km from Piyali Island. The island is well connected to Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali and Netidhopani by waterways.
