Peerlamarri

Peerlamarri is an ancient banyan tree located in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana.

Peerlamarri, TelanganaPeerlamarri which is also known as Peerla marri or Pillala Marri is an ancient banyan tree of eight hundred years old. Peerlamarri is the major tourist attraction in Telangana. People from various parts of the country come to see this tree. Students and aspirant botanists and archaeologists often visit this place of amazing natural beauty.

This major tourist attraction of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana is located at about four kilometres from Mehboobnagar town. Peerlamarri is comprised of many banyan trees that grow in proximity. It looked like the grandmother`s lap.

Peerlamarri is extended over three acres of land. In 2003, this banyan tree was announced that there would be a special cover to commemorate the tree.

Beneath the Peerlamarri tree, there lies the tomb of a medieval Muslim saint and hence this tree was named as "Peerlamarri". "Peerlamarri" is taken as "Peer" which means "saint" and "Marri" which means "Banyan tree". It is also pronounced as "Pillala Marri" which has the meaning like "Pilla" means Children and "Marri" means Banyan tree.

Adjacent to Peerlamarri, there is a science museum that houses some of the ancient, archaeological and medieval artefacts found in the Palamoor Region of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana, a newly formed state in India with capital as Hyderabad for 10 years. It is one of the best picnic spot of local importance.

The huge banyan tree looks like a giant green umbrella under which more than 1000 members can take shelter very easily. Near the Peerlamarri, there lies a hill of natural beauty and thin forest that is Nallamalla hills. Nallamalla hills spread over an area of around 3500 square kilometres. Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Wildlife Sanctuary is the nearest attraction of this place also. There are other nature and leisure tourism attractions near Peerlamarri like the Zoo in Mahabubnagar district, an Aquarium, and an Archaeological Museum. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva or Mahadeva located near Peerlamarri.

There is a small nursery near Peerlamarri and a deer park around it. This nature tourism spot also acts as the picnic spot and the shooting spot in Telangana. Some of the movies scenes are shot over there.
