Pavitrarohana of Hari is the sacred installation of Lord Vishnu or Hari as well as reaping the fruits of his worship all through the year. In Agni Purana, Lord Agni states that the first day of a lunar fortnight either in the beginning of the month of Ashada or the end of Kartika gives riches. Regarding the performance of the Adhana ceremony, the lord has said that beginning with the second day of the lunar fort-night the Adhana ceremony of Shri Gouri Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, Guha, Martanda, the Matri-Durgas, Shiva and Brahma should be performed. The Lord opines that there are certain regulations with regard to the Pavitrarohana.
The process begins with several consecrations. In the very beginning the worshipper should consecrate the knees, thighs and navel of the idol and adorn the feet with a garland of one thousand and eight flowers. Then the worshipper should consecrate the parents and the preceptors. Consecration should then be offered to the sun, the fire and Lord Vishnu. In the next step it is the duty of the worshipper to perform Sandhya.
Agni Purana narrates that on the eleventh day of both the dark and light fortnights he should adore the Lord Hari. The worshipper should offer edibles on the altar for his entire family. He should offer them to Khetrapala at the end of the door and adore Shree on the door. He should then adore Dhata, Daksha, Vidhata, Ganga, Yamuna, the conch-shell, Padma Nidhi and then in the middle his house and then his bow. He should then perform the purificatory rite of the elements. The next step in the Pavitrarohana involves meditating on the presiding deity Lord Varuna, holding a white lotus as his emblem, white-hued and crescent-shaped. In the similar manner the worshipper is supposed to meditate on other gods and should restrain the subtle elements of his body. In this way a worshipper should gradually purity his various limbs. He should mediate on his dry body from the tip of the foot to the end of the tuft of hair on the crown. Nyasa also is an important aspect of the entire process of Pavitraohana.
The next step of Pavitrarohana involves worship of the Ananta or the Earth, the fire and the Dharma and others, in the senses other impure beings, in Sattwa and other qualities the lotus, in Maya or Avidya (illusion) the principle of time, the sun and other luminous bodies and the king of birds should be adored. The worshipper during the process of Pavitrarohana asks the lord to ward off terror.
The Puran states that Indra and others, as well as Ananta and Varuna should be adored in the south west quarter, Lord Brahma and Indra in the north-east and their weapons in the outside. Airavata, the goat, the buffalo, the monkey, the deer, the bull, the tortoise and the swan should be adored outside. The gate-keepers, Kumuda and others of Lord Krishna should be adored in pairs at the gates from the east to the north.
Lord Agni concludes saying that Hari should be offered salutation by offering him with edibles. The worshipper should ask for protection from the lord saying that he has worshipped him for a full year and hence deserves protection. The Fire God also says that day and night. Having lauded Vishnu and offered oblation to fire in his honour he should perform Visarjana and this should be the mode of worship of the Lord daily.
