Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya in the East Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. It was declared a sanctuary in the year 1977; prior to that it was a part of the Khellong Forest Division. It has been recently declared a tiger reserve in 2002 based on a proposal in 1999.
Flora of Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary
Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary houses lowland semi-evergreen, evergreen forest and Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forests. 343 woody species of flowering plants have been recorded from the lowland areas of the park, with a high representation of species from the Euphorbiaceae and Lauraceae families. 1500 species of vascular plants are also expected from Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, of which 500 species would be woody. This sanctuary is also the abode of several orchid species.
Fauna of Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary is inhabited by almost 40 mammal species, which are tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, wild dog, Asiatic jackal, elephant, barking deer, gaur and sambhar etc. The commonest monkeys found here are rhesus and Assamese macaques and the capped langur. 16 species of civets, weasels, mongooses and yellow-throated marten have also been recorded in Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary.
