During the Chola period, Nandi Hills was called Ananda Giri meaning The Hill of Happiness. In late winters, Nandi Hill is popular spot for trekking for the bright sunny atmosphere.

Naming of Nandi Hill
Nandi Hill got its name from `Nandi`, the holy bull of Hindu god `Lord Shiva`. Rising to a height of 1,478 meters above the sea level, the Nandi Hill was acclaimed to be the summer resort of the Sultan of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. Various rivers like Palar River, Pennar River, and Arkavathy River start from Nandi hill.

Geography of Nandi Hills
Nandi Hill is 4,851 ft (1,479 m) above sea level. It is located close to the Bangalore International Airport. In addition, the hills are located about 20 km from the National Highway (NH-7) just after Devanahalli Town. Due to its location, Nandi Hills is rapidly developing and numerous commercial and residential ventures are underway in the region.

Climate of Nandi Hill
The soothing climate of Nandi hills also attracts tourists from far off places. During summer days, temperature fluctuates between 25-degree Celsius to 28 degree Celsius. Again, in winter, temperature drops down to as low as 8 to 10 degree C. Every year Nandi Hills of Karnataka has shown a record rainfall of nearly 100 to 150 centimetres.

Nandi Hill is the place of mesmerisation and is a good place for moderate trekking in Bengaluru. Every year many tourists from every part of the country visit the place. Amruth Sarovar, Tipu`s Summer Palace and Fort, Gavi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, Horse Way, Palar River Origin, Brahmashrama, Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple, Tipu Drop, Arkavathi River Origin, Children`s Playground, Muddena Halli and many other tourist spots are located near Nandi Hill.

Visiting Information
Bengaluru airport is the nearest airport from Nandi Hills, lying at a distance of approximately 60 kilometres. Chikaballapur is the closest railway station from Nandi Hills. This station is almost nine kilometres from Nandi Hill. This hill station is also well linked with other places of Karnataka via roadways. From Bengaluru, Nandi Hills is only 60 kilometres away. `Bangalore-Hyderabad National Highway` traverses this place. Government buses run from Bangalore, Chikaballapur and Nandigrama. It takes 2 hours from Bangalore and 1 hour from Chikkaballapur by bus.
