Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary is situated on the wetland ecosystem of South Delhi. This wetland ecosystem land is widely known as Najafgarh Lake. Najafgarh Lake is a very rich wetland ecosystem flourished with rich local and migratory bird life. The surrounding lands of Najafgarh Lake are filled with local wildlife.
Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary has been much widened over the years to drain all the water which in earlier decades used to collect in the Nagafgarh basin. Now this drain itself acts as an elongated water body or lake with trees planted on both its embankments with an inspection road running on one embankment.
During the winter month, Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary attracts the vast quantities of migratory birds and also supports local wildlife yearlong. Due to the rich wildlife observed in and around the less polluted stretch of the drain, this place acts a wildlife sanctuary to the local tourists.
The wetland ecosystem and wildlife habitat in Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary extended on several kilometres of Najafgarh drain in rural Delhi before entering the main city. The area of Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary is very important habitat to migratory water birds as well as the wildlife.
The area of Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary came to be recognized as an important wildlife habitat after the study of the naturalists during 1986-88. Najafgarh Bird Sanctuary is a very prosperous marshy land, with flourished eco system, is rich in local and migratory birds like Siberian Crane and the Pink-headed Ducks. The surrounding land was plenty of local wildlife. The local wildlife occurring in nearby and surrounding farmland includes the common foxes, jackals, hares, wild cats, nilgai, porcupines and various reptiles and snakes including the dreaded cobras.
