Molangoor Fort, also known as Molangoor Quilla, is situated almost 30 km away from Karimnagar city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The region was originally governed by the Recherla Vala clan of the Velama caste. The Velamas were primarily a warrior caste of Andhra Pradesh state. They were renowned for their code of honour and pride which often resulted in territorial warfare and family feuds. The Recherla Vala chieftains were the feudatories of the rulers of Kakatiya Empire. Molangoor Fort was one of the strongly fortified defensive structures of the Kakatiya rulers. The fortress in Molangoor, along with the forts of Rachakonda and Deverakonda, served as a defensive shield for the rulers of Kakatiya dynasty against enemy attacks.
Due to its strategic location, Molangoor Fort played a significant role during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire. After the decline of the Kakatiya dynasty, the region and the fort were occupied by several rulers from different clans. Eventually the structure was occupied by the Muslim rulers. After the battle it was damaged to great extent. The fortress included several monuments in the premises such as stables, garrisons, halls, palaces and various other buildings. However, presently most of the structures are in a ruined state.
