Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve or MER is the one and only elephant reserve in the area of eastern India and it is situated in the regions of Bankura District and Paschim Medinipur District of the state of West Bengal. The total area of this wildlife reserve measures nearly about 414.06 square kilometres and the nearby 1436 square kilometres of land is known as the `Zone of Influence`. In the year 1987, there were only 47 elephants in the Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve and its quantity increased to 118 in 2010. The Government of West Bengal declared it as an official elephant reserve on 24th October, 2002.
The area represented by Mayurjharna Elephant Reserve involves Forest Blocks of Kangsabati Soil Conservation - II which occupies an area of 88.50 square kilometres, Quchipara Forest Blocks of Kangsabati Soil Conservation Division - II occupying 38 square kilometres, Forest Blocks of Bankura (South) Division occupying an area measuring about 91.50 square kilometres, Belpahari, Jalpukuria, Udalchua and Searbinda Forest Blocks of Quilapal and West Midnapore Division with an area of 64.56 square kilometres, Banspahari, Kankrajhore, Bhulabheda and Mayurjharna Forest Blocks of Barudi, West Midnapore Division and Popo which measures about 131.50 square kilometres in area and some other areas.
