Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve which is the formal name Similipal-Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve is located in the Keonjhar district of Odisha. Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve is situated at a latitudinal and longitudinal extension of 860-20`and latitude 210.16` to 200.45` (north). Odisha is one of the states in Eastern India, where one can find elephant in large numbers. The elephant areas are taken as priority by the State Government of Odisha to preserve elephants and to foster tourism in the wildlife. For that, Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve was formed.
Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve in Odisha comprises of the total area of 7043.04 square km. Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve encompasses three protected areas like Similipal Tiger Reserve, Hadgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary.
Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve also includes the reserve forests, protected forests, private lands and Revenue lands. The revenue lands are known as agricultural lands. These revenue lands or agricultural lands are lying adjacent to the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve. The agricultural lands of Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve spread about 3571.26 kilometres.
The landscape beauty of Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve is often attracted to the tourists. The main feature of the Mayurbhaj Elephant Reserve is the Hadgarh Sanctuary and the reservoir of Hadgarh, which is adjoining with Baula Hills. The reservoir of Hadgarh is built on Salandi River that takes its origin in southern Similipal Tiger Reserve.
Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve is included with Simlipal National Park, which is located in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Simlipal National Park has an area of 845.70 square kilometres and has some beautiful waterfalls like Joranda Waterfalls and Barehipani Waterfalls. Simlipal is home to Royal Bengal Tigers, Wild elephants, Gaurs, Chausingha and as well as an orchidarium. Other than Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve are Baitarani Elephant Reserve, South Odisha Elephant Reserve and Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary.
