Manikgad Fort is an ancient hill fortress which is located in the district of Chandrapur in the state of Maharashtra. It was built by the Naga rulers in the 9 Century CE at an altitude of 507 m. The structure is presently in a ruined and dilapidated condition. The site is inhabited by many wild animals such as boars and panthers, Manikgad Fort is also known as Gadchandur Fort.
History of Manikgad Fort Manikgad Fort was founded during the 9 Century CE by Gahilu who was the last Mana Naga King. The Mana Naga tribe settled in this region around 9 century CE. The fortress was named Manikagad after Goddess Manikadevi who is the patron deity of the Mana Nagas. Eventually the name was modified to Manikgad.
According to local legends, it is believed that the fortification was constructed by Mankyal who was a Gond ruler. However, the lintel of the main gateway includes the carvings of a Naga image in relief.
Architecture of Manikgad Fort
Manikgad Fort was constructed with large black stones. The Rampart walls of the structure surround a valley. This valley consists of ruins of ancient building and warehouses or godowns. At present, the outlines of some of these buildings are still visible against the rampart walls. The bastion in the south and the supporting wall has entirely collapsed. A cannon is present in the valley below which was mounted on the collapsed bastion. The cannon is built with many straps of iron that are welded together. The main entrance of Manikgad Fort is still well preserved and intact.
