The geographical coordinates of the site are latitude 19.0398478°N and longitude 72.8377676°E. It was built in a strategic location in the Mahim Bay. The fort provides a panoramic view of Mahim in the east; Bandra in the north; and Worli in the south. The origin of the structure is vague and unclear.

History of Mahim Fort
Mahim Fort was occupied by the commander of Portuguese army, Dom Joao De Monoy, in 1516. It was the centre of recurrent clashes between a Gujarati ruler Ali Shah and the Portuguese. Later in 1534, Mahim was captured by the Portuguese by defeating Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Eventually the island of Mahim was surrendered to Charles II of England by the Portuguese in 1661. The structure was later renovated and strengthened under the supervision of Sir Thomas Grantham of the British East India Company in the year 1684.

The fort served as a strategic observation tower against attacks from the Portuguese army and the forces of Marathas Empire.

Present Condition of Mahim Fort
At present, Mahim Fort is in a state of disrepair due to negligence from the local administration. Moreover, parts of the structure have caved in because of tidal erosion. It is also heavily encroached by slums. Currently Mahim Fort is occupied by the Government of Maharashtra. The historical site has been declared as a Grade I Heritage Structure. However, the administration has not taken any steps to maintain and preserve the fortress.
