The peak is a place of pilgrimage for the Khasi Tribe belonging to indigenous religion. The peak is a symbol of deep rooted spiritual belief of the Hynniewtrep - the seven huts people, prevailing in the West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Jiantia Hills district of East Meghalaya. These are believed to have descended to earth from a Golden Vine Bridge, atop the Sacred U Lum Sohpetbneng Peak.

According to a legend U Lum Sohpetbneng located on top of a hill, was the spot of a golden ladder that connected Heaven and Earth, God and Man. However, the connection was later severed in accordance with divine decree. It is regarded as the place of ancient wisdom and values and the repository of deep religious philosophy. Every year in the month of February the indigenous Khasi people gather here to conduct various rites and rituals and offer their prayers.
