In the Hindu mythology, King Romapada is mentioned as a king of the Anga. After King Dharmaratha went to forest; Romapada became the King of Anga. He married Vershini who was the elder sister of Kaushalya, mother of Rama and made friendship with King Dasharatha of Ayodhya who was the father of Rama.
Legend of King Romapada
During his reign there was a great dearth for want of rain. There were no rain in his territory and all living creatures began to suffer. There were no food and water and draught spread all over. Romapada prayed and pleaded to Lord Vishnu to rescue his province from being eradicated. He called his councillors together, and they advised him to allure Sage Rishyasringa from his father"s hermitage in the forest. As a youth, Rishyasringa was destined to be the achiever of noble deed. So when Rishyasringa performed a sacrifice or Yajna, then rain came back to his kingdom.
Descendants of King Romapada
King Romapada had two children, a son named Chaturanga and a daughter named Shanta who was adopted. Shanta was a daughter of Kausalya the wife of Raja Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya. She was later given in adoption to Raja Romapada. Chaturanga was the founder of the game "chaturanga".
